Motobu Tenshin Ryu, 本部天心流, (MTR) trans., The District of Motobu, The Way of a Heart Set on Heaven, was developed by Ahan under the guidance of M. Toyosato and M. Nakasone in Bisezaki, Motobu, Okinawa between 1986 and 1996. It combines elements of Motobu Ryu, 本部流, Shobayashi Shorin Ryu, 小林少林流, Jigen-Ryū, 示現流, Kenjutsu, and the Shiteru-Kei (Shinto/Ceremonialism) of Japanese archery, Ogasawara-Ryu Kyudo, 小笠原流弓道. Some elements of Yang Tai Chi of Chen Man Ching have also been added, as it too is practiced on Okinawa within some members of the Chinese community, known as Chen Man Ching Yang Tai Chi, 鄭曼青楊式太極拳. Chen Man Ching's Yang Tai Chi is added to promote the longevity of MTR practitioners.
Motobu Tenshin Ryu was developed in the area around Bisesaki on the northern, westernmost point on Motobu, Okinawa, and thus the term relates to the region, the soul and spirit where it was developed, the Motobu Peninsula. It is not directly related to the Motobu family, or the direct lineage of the Kata of Motobu Choki. Motobu Tenshin Ryu could be translated in the sense of "The Art of a Heavenly Spirit of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence as Practiced Among the People of Motobu, Okinawa."
It is a no hard contact, "Blue Zone" diet maintained, no fighting tournaments permitted, in the spirit of Katori Shinto Ryu, Kata only tournaments practice, of Southern Crane Kung Fu lineage. Ahan lived in Japan for approximately 15 years developing it there, and now he teaches MTR in the region of Redding and Mt. Shasta, CA.
Ahan quote, "My worst enemy is myself. My worst foe is me, and so I am accordingly the only person I'm at war with. That is how I keep it." Ahan adds, "The weakest point in my Kamae, 構え (On Guard Stance) is my mouth." While to on lookers it may in someways look similar to Karate, but it isn't Karate at all. Ahan practices and teaches MTR as a form of Ryukyu Kempo, 琉球拳法, and consequently rejects the ultranationalism and ultra militarism infused into many martial arts in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 1950s. Motobu Tenshin Ryu is Kata centric, physical fitness focused, and Blue Zone diet based. Its loyalties on the issue of Okinawa and its relationships with China, Japan, and America parallel the interests and sentiments on these issues of the Sho family of Okinawa. Ahan holds high, master level Dan in Karate, Kenjutsu, and Kyudo. He holds a Kyu in Urasenke Tea. He is functional in Mandarin, Sanskrit, Classical Greek, and is fluent in Japanese, and he also functional in Northern, Motobu area Okinawan. Ahan is also a singer and player of traditional Okinawan music. Motobu Tenshin Ryu is holistic, metaphysical, total self, self-defense.
Ahan holds high, master level ranks in Karate, Kenjutsu, and Kyudo. He also studied Urasenke Tea in Chiba. He is functional in Mandarin, Sanskrit, Classical Greek, and is reasonably fluent in Japanese, and he is also functional in Northern, Motobu area Okinawan. Ahan is also a singer and player of traditional Okinawan music. Motobu Tenshin Ryu is holistic, metaphysical, total self, self-defense. In the USA, the odds of dying from cancer or cardiovascular disease are far greater than that of being killed by an attacker or statistically even a bullet, and thus MTR approaches so called "martial art" from that perspective, the position of the Whole Self, the community connected, physical and spiritual Self, Self-Defense.
